| Meet Our Fitness Star of the month Mr. Barry Scholtes Age: 63 years young! Occupation: Electronics instructor Mr. Barry Scholtes involvement with fitness began in his youth, as an active member of his high school football and track teams. His athletic pursuits continued into college and well after. In 1974 Mr. Scholtes began coaching the track team at Overfelt high school in San Jose, California. Running is Mr. Scholtes passion, and says it has greatly improved his quality of life. Barry admits that he really enjoys the way running makes him feel, and it must! As he rises every morning at 4 am to start his day with an 8 mile run! During his lunch hour he will also run for two to three miles, which is a fantastic way to break the tension and stress that can occur during a work day. On weekends Barry prefers to add in other components to his running routine. He will usually include his stationary bike or rowing machine into his weekend workouts, as well as enjoying long walks with his wife near their home. Barry has participated in 17 Marathons over his running career and says “he has run so many 10k’s that he has lost track” Barry is also participates in triathlons! What an athlete! When it comes to nutrition, Mr. Scholtes eats as healthy as he possibly can. Barry enjoys fresh salads on most nights of the week as well as lean cuts of chicken, and fish, and occasionally beef. Barry’s excellent fitness level helped him a great deal when push came to shove. Approximately five years ago, Mr. Scholtes was diagnosed with cancer. His doctor told him that his fitness level aided him a great deal in his speedy recovery after his surgery. And speedy it was! Barry was up and running again just 3 weeks after his surgery! If it had not been for Mr. Scholtes being in top physical form, this probably would have not been possible. Barry has been cancer free now for 5 years. Mr. Scholtes is undoubtedly a model of what we should all be striving for when it comes to incorporating fitness into our lives. Mr. Scholtes is very dedicated to his fitness program and healthy nutrition, and because of this it has not only improved his life, but probably saved it as well. When I asked Barry what fitness advice he would give a newcomer to the fitness lifestyle, he said “take it slow, one day at a time, and ease into your new routine. Don’t try to do too much at once, and make sure to stick with your program. It takes time to improve, it doesn’t happen over night.” Excellent advice! Thank you Mr. Scholtes for sharing your story with all of us! Keep on Running! |
